The classes listed below are in the recommended order to start learning about Voice Over as a career and what it takes to be successful.

Voiceover 101
Learn more about what voiceover is, how to get started and the basics of running a VO business. This 3-hour class will cover how to get into the business when you have no experience, the genres of VO, the importance of coaching, equipment/tech basics and lots of time to ask questions.
Plus you’ll step into the booth to perform some copy and find out what it’s like to record a spot.
This class is offered monthly. It’s available Virtually or In-Person.

Beginning Acting for Voice Over
Want to be a voice actor, but don’t know where to start? It’s more than just talking into the mic! Learn basic acting techniques to help you bring life to your reads.
This 2 hour class led by Brad Oxnam will cover basic techniques to help you find your characters and interpret the script.
You’ll learn:
How acting can help your voice over career
Basic actor terminology
Breaking down your script
Activating your script using verbs
Establishing specific relationships for better clarity

Career Path
This 12 week course will show you the path to making your dream of “doing voiceover” into a career. Answering the essential questions of beginners and intermediate talent that want to know: how it works, what do I need to do to make this my daily job, what are the next steps and what is “a day in the life” of a working voice actor like.
Using our 3-Star Method, Career Path will give students the tools in Performance, Business and Technology to build a great foundation for their career. You’ll receive a workbook with all the information as well as extra worksheets for you to save and adapt to your needs as you build your career path and a thriving business.
Topics include:
- Getting Started – what are the essential tools needed
- Auditioning – best practices, self direction, finding auditions
- Business Concepts – invoicing, CRMs, customer service
- Marketing – Social Media, emails, in-person events, and more
- Equipment – home studio setups, editing techniques, microphone technique
- Demos – types, rates, knowing when you’re ready
- Rates – rate guides, Union/Non-union, how to quote rates
- Performance – script analysis, acting concepts, taking direction
- Vocal Health – warm ups, general care of your instrument, mental health affects vocal health
- Exploring the Different Genres – which path is right for you
- And much more!
Christi Bowen, founder of Tennessee Voice Over Studios, teaches the classes and she’ll be joined by guest coaches with specialties in the various topics. Career Path is available in-person in Nashville, Tennessee or virtually via Zoom. The in-person class is limited to 12 students and online is limited to 8 students. Classes are Wednesdays from 6:30pm -8:30pm Central time
This class is offered 3 times a year – January, mid-April and mid-August. It’s available Virtually and In-Person.

5 Weekly Workouts - IN PERSON
In this class you’ll learn techniques to interpret scripts and add tools to your toolbox that will help you prepare for a career in voiceover. Script interpretation is the backbone of learning how to book work. We’ll focus on commercial, eLearning, narration and more! Class meets weekly for 5 weeks. Directors Christi Bowen, Kevin Kilpatrick or Michael Bornheim direct you in the booth and provide valuable instruction to help your career grow.
Classes are limited to 6 people to give ample time for everyone in the 90 minute session. Copy is provided but if you have a script you’d like to work on, please bring it.
If you need to miss a class (life happens) you can reschedule for the next 5 week session, space permitting.
The workouts repeat every 6 weeks.

To get the most of the experience, it’s best to be in a quiet recording space (preferably your home setup) with few distractions and cameras on. Using a mic versus the computer mic is highly recommended.
Classes are limited to 6 people to give ample time for everyone in the 90 minute session. Copy is provided but if you have a script you’d like to work on, please bring it.

Understanding Audio for Voice Over
Learn the basics of setting up your recording environment and working with your equipment. We’re more than just voice actors anymore. You need to know and understand the technical requirements of recording and delivering quality files. In this course we’ll cover acoustics, what gear to buy, basic recording info and learning your recording software.
This class is offered quarterly.

This 2-week class will dive deep into how to run a voiceover business. Each week we’ll focus on a different aspect of creating and running a successful business – either part-time or full-time. Take your interest and skills to the next level. Topics covered include: Marketing, Finances/Money Matters, Organization, Client Relations.

Want to earn and learn at the same time? Then you need to do eLearning!
Christi Bowen will teach you performance basics and discuss the business of this business-oriented genre. She’ll share ways to add value to your eLearning, rate information, client best practices and more.

Love audiobooks? Rodney will tell you how he built his business. He’ll let you in on the mistakes he made and how to avoid them by being better prepared as you begin. He’ll also teach you how to do your own research as you take control and accept responsibility for building your business from the ground up.
